Room 1 The Dillon “Jimmy” Dorrell Room

Room #1 Riverview named Dillon “Jimmy” Dorrell.

Dillon “Jimmy” Dorrell was born July 1, 1910 in a small village of Aberdeen located in eastern Ohio.  He was a graduate of Rising Sun High School and returned to Rising Sun with a teaching degree from the University of Cincinnati.  He taught for 35 years and was also a major contributor to the Ohio County Historical Society.  He was very instrumental in discovering, cataloging and maintaining historical documents and cemeteries of Ohio County.

Room 2 The Colonel Abel Pepper Room

Room #2 Non-riverview named Colonel Abel Pepper

Colonel Abel Pepper was born in Virginia in 1778.  He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and  immigrated to Indiana territory in 1815 where he became colonel and commissioner of Dearborn County.  As he continued his military career he became a resident of Rising Sun.  He was a devoted member of the Masonic Fraternity and died in Rising Sun March 20, 1860.

Room 3 The Dr. Mathias Haines Room

Room #3 Non-riverview named Dr. Mathias Haines

Dr. Mathias Haines was born in Raymond, New Hampshire on December 30, 1786.  Growing up he stayed busy during the summer months assisting his father on the farm and during the winter months he attended common school.  By his own efforts he studied medicine under Dr. Sheed.  In 1816 he and his twin brother traveled by horseback to Rising Sun and set up a medical practice.  He was instrumental in advancing education in the community and building a house to be used for an academy.

Room 4 The J.W. Whitlock Room

Room #4 Non-riverview named J.W. Whitlock

In 1907 J.W. (Row) Whitlock developed a boat with the ability to travel 23 – 25 mph.  That same boat won the championship for the Midwest and became famous coast to coast.  He built two boats that achieved a round trip between Cincinnati and Louisville. The trip was 267 miles and was completed in 267 minutes and 49 seconds.

Room #5 Riverview named John James

John James traveled by stagecoach with his family in May of 1807  to the Northwest territories.  In 1811 he purchased over one thousand acres along the Ohio River.  He became the proprietor, surveyor, and founder of the region.  He encouraged others to settle in the region and developed a strategic plan for the town now called Rising Sun.

John Fulton (uncle to Robert Fulton) traveled from Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 1798.  He was the first person to build a log cabin along the Ohio River which is now known as Front Street.  In order to trade for supplies he would travel three days one way to Lexington, Kentucky.
